deluge
I spent many hours looking for that perfect torrent manager. Azerus just sucks on Ubuntu. It’s outdated, a resource hog and just didn’t seem to work. Ktorrent is pretty good, and has quite a few features, but still it wasn’t that ‘perfect’ torrent manager I was looking for. And then I read a post on the Ubuntu forums about deluge. Deluge can do just about everything Azerus can do, but using only half the memory and not have any problems reading and writing to my mounted drives on my file server.

amarok
xmms used to be my favorite music player. But now that I have gigs and gigs of music it just doesn’t cut it anymore. Amarok is a very feature-rich music player that can also sit neatly in the system tray. It has the ability to view album art and download art that you are missing from your collection. This works great since almost all my music is full albums.

wine
I’ve been wanting to start playing World of Warcraft again. But since I was switching to Ubuntu I thought I was going to have to dual boot just to play it. But thanks to wine I’ve been able to play it flawlessly in Linux. I can even do ctl+alt+arrow left/right and switch desktops to hit up thottbot without any problem.

beryl
Vista has some eye candy, doesn’t it? The new alt+tab, the preview of windows on the task bar; But why am I talking about Vista on a post about Linux, you ask? Because beryl will make your Ubuntu desktop actually look better than Vista. It has just about all the features Vista does and and some it doesn’t. You can use the middle mouse button on your desktop to spin a 3D cube; each side of the cube contains one of your desktops. This isn’t static images either, its all real time. If there is one program you should download to give you bragging rights, it would be beryl.

amsn
Now gaim can connect just fine to msn. But it just lacks some of the features the new msn live has. Amsn, however, is specifically designed to look, feel, and act like msn messenger. While I use gaim for my aim and google talk accounts, I still use amsn for my msn account.

kobo
Okay, a top 10 Linux list just wouldn’t be complete without a game in it. Kobo is, in my opinion, the best game to ever come free with an operating system. I love this game. I have spent so many hours playing this simple space shooter. But it isn’t a lame asteroid clone, no sir, this is a fun yet complex space shooter where you fly around and attack space fortresses. It’s hard to explain, but tons of fun to play.

xchat
If your using Linux you should damn well know about irc. Xchat is one of the best irc clients out there. There are even help channels on irc dedicated to helping you with Ubuntu problems.

gftp
As the name implies, gftp is an ftp client for the gnome desktop. Gftp is a nice, simple, and fast ftp client. One of the nice things about gnome applications is that they may lack tons of features, but they generally work very well at what they do.

drioid battles
This one is more than just a game. In this, you program virtual robots using a special programming language. You then take the bots you programed and have them battle each other in a virtual arena. This game takes a bit to learn, but for the same reason, it’s very addictive.

kdevelop
This last one will only really come in use if you are a programmer. This is a C++, ruby, and general scripting programming environment. I think it’s one of the best available on Linux, though I’d be more than happy to learn of a better one (suggestions???).

Free Reader

• Critical add-ons, such as UI language package, JPEG2000/JBIG decoder, CJK package, GDI+ for early Windows version, etc

The followings are several examples of non-free, advanced add-ons:

• Foxit Reader Pro Pack is not free. It unlocks functions to save annotation, save a PDF document as a text file, copy text from text viewer. Actually without Pro Pack, you are still able to annotate a PDF document and print it out. However when you save the annotated document, it will be stamped with an evaluation mark on the top-right corner of the annotated pages. If you purchase a Pro Pack add-on, then there will be no evaluation mark.
• Foxit PDF Creator, which allows you to convert non-PDF file into PDF file, is non-free.
• Foxit PDF Editor, which allows you to modify content of a PDF file, is non-free.

o Promise 20378 on-board SATA - Unable to load driver when installing Vista RC1 or once installed.
+ Build 5600 Solution: Disable in BIOS and use only the on-board VIA VT8237 SATA until Promise are able to supply a compatible driver.
+ Build 5728 Solution (x64): Setup a 1 disk Raid0 in the BIOS and load the Promise 20378 Windows x64 driver when setting up drives during Vista install.
o Realtek 8110C/8110S LAN - Conflict may exist between on-board LAN and Via VT8237 SATA when booting.
+ Solution: Disable Realtek LAN in BIOS and install LAN card. Manually clear the CMOS with the on-board jumper to access the BIOS & disable the on-board LAN.
o Realtek ALC655 - Vista will automatically install VIA AC ‘97 sound driver. General sound issues such as skipping and hiss may be heard.
+ Solution: Install Realtek AC 97′ Vista Beta Sound Driver (6156) [Note: Tested Beta Sound Driver fine in build 5728]
o A major problem with many systems with SATA Controllers is that sound, specifically when playing MP3s, will skip when using the new drivers supplied with Vista RC1.
+ Solution: “Downgrade” the driver for your SATA Controller, the Via VT8237 in this instance, for a fairly recent XP driver. Sound skips are now a thing of the past.
[+ Note: This problem has been fixed with build 5728 so there is no need to change the Via VT 8237 driver from the installed MS Vista driver.]
